The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition challenging the constitutional validity of certain provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
The Bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran rejected the petition challenging the constitutional validity of Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the 1961 Act.
The Apex Court, however, granted liberty to petitioner one Rupshi Singh to raise the issue before the Parliament.
While Section 2 defines dowry, Section 3 penalises giving and taking dowry. Section 4 penalises demanding dowry.
