The Delhi High Court on Monday granted one-day interim bail to former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted in the Unnao rape case, to undergo a cataract surgery.
Sengar was allowed medical bail to undergo the eye surgery on February 4.
The Bench of Justice Yashwant Sharma and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar directed Sengar to undergo an eye surgery on February 4 and surrender back to the jail authorities on February 5.
Appearing for Sengar, Senior Advocate Manish Vashisht today submitted that the former MLA would require two extra days for observation after the surgery.
The Bench, however, declined to grant medical bail for more than one day.
This is the third instance of Sengar being released on medical bail.
The Court had initially granted Sengar interim bail on medical grounds till December 20, 2024, for a follow-up medical consultation by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
The medical bail was later extended till January 20, enabling him to recover from the health issues he was facing after an eye surgery and the treatment he underwent for hemorrhoids.
The High Court had extended his medical bail for four weeks with the observation that no further extension would be granted.
Sengar surrendered before the Tihar Jail authorities on January 20.
The expelled BJP MLA was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh in 2017. He was also convicted for murdering the victim’s father in connivance with police officers of Makhi, a village in Unnao district. He was awarded a 10-year jail term in the second case.
The Unnao rape survivor was allegedly kidnapped and raped by Sengar between June 11 and June 20, 2017, when she was a minor. She was allegedly sold for Rs 60,000, and later recovered at the Maakhi police station. The survivor was reportedly threatened and warned by the police officials against speaking out, as instructed by Sengar.
