The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday made a resounding comeback to the national capital, ending a hiatus of 26 years by securing 48 seats out of 70 constituencies in the Delhi Assembly elections 2025.
The saffron party sweeped the polls, winning a comfortable 2/3rd majority in an electrifying contest with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
AAP, which was eying a straight third term, could only manage 22 seats, much below the majority mark of 36 and down from it’s 2020 tally of 62.
National Convenor of AAP and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal lost the New Delhi Assembly seat to BJP’s Parvesh Verma by a margin of 4089 votes.
Accepting his defeat with ‘great humility,’ Kejriwal said the AAP would not only play the role of a constructive opposition, but would also remain among the people and continue to serve them,.
Congratulating BJP, the former Chief Minister said he hoped the party would fulfill all the promises for which the people of Delhi have voted them.
Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi, who won the Kalkaji seat after defeating BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,521 votes, took out a roadshow to celebrate her victory. Another interesting fact about the Kalkaji constituency was that Rajan Singh, the lone transgender candidate in the Delhi Assembly elections, chose the Assembly seat to fight the polls. The 27-year-old secured 85 votes.
Congress, one of the oldest parties in the country, which had earlier ruled Delhi for 15 years, failed to open its account. The party performed on the similar lines as it did in the last two Assembly elections of Delhi and made a hat-trick of scoring zeroes.
While AAP top guns, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Somnath Bharti and Saurabh Bharadwaj lost the elections, party leader Gopal Rai won from Babarpur seat.
BJP’s Satish Upadhyay emerged victorious from Malviya Nagar constituency, defeating three-time AAP MLA Somnath Bharti with a margin of 2131 votes. Upadhyay became the first party leader to win the seat after Rajendra Gupta in 1993.
AAP leader and former deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lost the Jangpura seat to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by 675 votes. Marwah became the first BJP candidate to ever win the Jangpura constituency. He defeated AAP leader and former deputy CM Manish Sisodia by a margin of 675 votes.
Delhi went to polls in a single phase on February 5. As per the Election Commission, the approximate voter turnout after the Delhi assembly election stood at 60.54 percent.
