The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation seeking compensation for the victims of the stampede that occurred at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, leading to several deaths.
The Bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice PK Mishra told the petitioner to approach the High Court for relief.
Filed by Anand Legal Trust, the petition claimed that 200 people died in the incident, adding that all deaths were not accounted for. Compensation remained to be paid to many families, it noted.
It further said that the incidents of stampede had become recurrent. The Railways had issued notice to people to remove videos being uploaded, claimed the petitioner.
The Counsel appearing for the petitioner claimed that there were videos and eye-witnesses accounts, which showed that the death toll was higher.
The Bench observed that if family members of a deceased had not received ex-gratia, they may approach the Court.
The Delhi High Court had earlier this month issued notice to the Union Government and the Railways on a petition seeking measures to prevent stampede at railway stations.
