Committee seeks suggestions from SCBA members over changes in election bye-laws

In order to bring transparency in the electoral process of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and make it more democratic, a committee appointed by the Supreme Court on Wednesday invited suggestions from SCBA members regarding changes in its bye-laws.

Headed by Apex Court judge Justice L Nageswara Rao, the committee asked the SCBA members to submit their suggestions via e-mail by March 20.

The Committee would review the tenure and strength of the SCBA Executive Committee, along with the eligibility of those contesting elections and voting in these elections.

It would further review the process of disqualification of candidates (including providing inducements for votes) and any other issue concerning the election of SCBA Executive Committee members.

The Committee told the members to limit their submissions to two pages and include their SCBA membership as well as mobile number for verification.

On February 25, the Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice NK Singh had constituted a committee headed by Justice LN Rao to democratise the election process of SCBA.

The directions were issued on the grounds that the norms and rules for election to the Executive Committee of SCBA have remained unchanged for decades.

In a separate order, the top court of the country recently mandated one-third women’s reservation in SCBA posts.
