The Central government on Monday cleared the appointment of two lawyers as Additional Judges of the Uttarakhand High Court and the Gauhati High Court.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the information on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

As per the tweet, Advocate Subhash Upadhyay was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court. Besides, Advocate Shamima Jahan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Upadhyay’s name in 2023.

As on May 1, the Uttarakhand High Court is functioning with nine judges as against its sanctioned strength of 11, with a vacancy position of two.

Jahan’s name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on January 4, 2025.

In the same resolution, the Collegium had recommended the name of judicial officer Yarenjungla Longkumer.

Even though his name was cleared by the government in February, Jahan’s recommendation remained pending.
