States get 3 more months to appoint Lokayukta

The apex court on Tuesday (July 10) granted three more months to the States to appoint Lokayukta or Uplokayukta after being informed by the States that they were still in the process to appoint Lokayukta.

The bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi, R Banumathi and Navin Sinha was acting on the plea filed by BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking appointment of Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayukta in the states.

During today’s hearing, the states Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, West Bengal, Odisha, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh submitted affidavit about the steps taken to appoint  Lokayukta or Uplokayukta.
