Above – Representative Picture of Lawyers

The Bar Council Of Delhi  has sent a legal notice to India’s premier newsTV channel Aaj Tak for painting an unflattering picture of lawyers in one of its programmes.

In the notice, the BCD has said that it has taken a serious view of the programme where under the title “Saare Jahan Se Sacha”, one of the promos show negotiations between a lawyer and his client about a rape case where the lawyer is shown saying “bachhche hain, galti ho jaati hai” (They are kids, they make mistakes) and shamelessly demanding fees and extracting bundle of notes from a client to do the needful

“the above mentioned promo is indubitably defamatory, casting serious derogatory aspersions on the legal profession. The manner of presentation of a lawyer denigrates, scandalizes and causes disrepute to the legal profession in pubic, seriously damaging the image and reputation of members of the profession. The contents of the ad/[ad/promo of your TV programme  is against dignity, integrity and image of lawyers and demands the whole issue of crime and violence against women, which is not expected from an esteemed institution like Aaj Tak” .

“You are therefore called upon to immediately stop telecast of the promo and also tender apology publicly, failing which the BCD will be at liberty to take civil and criminal action against your organization and the concerned person”, the notice said.
