The government will make another attempt on Monday to get the Triple Talaq bill passed in Rajya Sabha despite the numbers being heavily stashed against it and even as some of its allies have reservations about it. The opposition will do everything to stall it and is insisting that the bill be referred to a select committee of the House.

The government had listed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 on previous Monday but the Rajya Sabha did not take it up amid opposition’s reservations. This had led to heated exchanges between the opposition and treasury benches and the House was adjourned for the day amid ruckus. A united Opposition on Monday last thwarted the government’s attempt to push the bill in Parliament’s upper House or Rajya Sabha. Lok Sabha or the lower House earlier had passed the bill on December 28.

It could be a repeat of the scene today. The government urgency is due to the fact that it has to replace the ordinance promulgated in September last year. The upper house sits for two more days during the winter session.
