SC issues notice to Election Commission, asks whether 50 percent EVM results can be matched, crosschecked with VVPATs for Lok Sabha elections

EVMs: A Question of Credibility

The Supreme Court on Friday (Mar 15) issued notice to Election Commission and sought reply on the plea of 21 opposition parties seeking direction that 50 per cent EVM results are matched and crosschecked with VVPATs before the declaration of results in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta, Sanjiv Khanna also asked the poll panel to appoint a senior officer to assist it.

The matter has been posted for next hearing to Mar 25.

The plea has been filed by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu (TDP) and several other leaders including Farooq Abdullah (NC), Sharad Pawar (NCP), Sharad Arvind Kejriwal (AAP), Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Yadav (LJD), Derek O’Brien (TMC) and M K Stalin (DMK).
