Cap on Auto Rickshaws in Capital to Stay, focus on mass transport, Supreme court Says

A Supreme Court  bench comprising of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Deepak Gupta, while hearing a matter related to the problem of vehicular emissions and matters related to vehicular pollution observed that new technology of auto rickshaws do not mean that the cap on autos in the Delhi NCR can be removed. “The cap is of 100000, there are about 95000 autos in the capital area. You can introduce 5000 vehicles in Delhi, rest you can introduce in other cities said Justice Arun Mishra to the counsel appearing for Bajaj Auto. Bajaj Auto plan o introducing BS VI compliant autos which are more efficient in managing air pollution.

The bench said we’ll need to ask the centre about this. “Cities like Gwalior, Bhopal, Kanpur and Allahabad, autos run on diesel, where if you sit for 10 minutes you’ll start vomiting.”   Justice Mishra also expressed his discontent with the current situation of a person owning more cars than is necessary. “He said the problem is one person owning 5 cars.  We can understand every earning individual having own car, but an individual owning so many cars is not feasible.”

This overpopulation of cars grows into more parking problems where the police have to be involved. Justice Deepak Gupta said the focus and priority should be on large scale mass transport like metro, buses, and then small scale transport like autos and cabs can be focused on.
