The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea filed by SP-BSP candidate Atul Rai who has won from Uttar Pradesh Ghosi’s constituency seeking protection from arrest in connection with cases including rape and kidnapping.
A college student had complained to the Police alleging sexual assault against Rai on May 1 following which a FIR was registered. Rai had moved the Supreme Court seeking protection from arrest till the end of the Lok Sabha elections on May 23.
On May 17, the vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna had refused protection from arrest.
Rai’s counsel had said to the bench that his client was deliberately being framed to prevent him from campaigning in the just-concluded general elections.
