Justice Sapre retires without an official farewell

Supreme Court judge, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre retired from office on 27th August. He served at Supreme Court for five years and two weeks. At his request, the Supreme Court Bar Association skipped a formal farewell function that is otherwise routinely held for every retiring Supreme Court judge. He wished to meet the bar members at the library instead.

SCBA however organized an informal farewell gathering in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India on the lawns of the Supreme Court; no speeches were made by any guests.

Justice Sapre started practising at the bar in Madhya Pradesh High Court.

He was appointed Additional Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh on October 25, 1999 and was made Permanent Judge on October 24, 2001.

He was transferred to Rajasthan High Court in 2010 and Chhattisgarh High Court in 2012.

He was elevated as first Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur where he assumed charge on March 23, 2013 becoming the first Chief Justice of that High Court. He was subsequently made Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2013. Justice Sapre served at the Supreme Court from 13th August 2014 to 27th August 2019.
