SC Takes Suo Moto Note Of Rising Rape Cases, Asks States, HCs For Status

The Supreme Court has called for the revamp of the criminal justice system in cases of sexual violence against women.

Taking suo moto notice of the sharp rise in the number of rape cases in the country, the court sought responses from the centre, states and all high courts on status of cases including probe, collection of evidence, forensic and medical evidence, recording of statement of victim and time frame for trial.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice S A Bobde and comprising Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant has sought the reports by February 7, 2020 and said this was needed to collate information and status for holistic implementation of provisions of rape law. “To suggest measures for making the criminal justice system more efficacious and responsive towards the offence of rape”, the court asked senior advocate Siddarth Luthra to be the amicus curiae in the matter and asked the Solicitor General to extend all cooperation in the matter.
