#KanhaiyaKumar: The Delhi High Court adjourned the application seeking cancellation of Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail to July 19. The bench also directed both the petitioner and the state to submit their submissions by the next date of hearing.
#JusticeKatju: The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its orders on Justice Markandey Katju’s plea seeking quashing of a resolution passed in both the houses of Parliament, condemning his remarks on Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose.
#Dowry: The Bombay High Court today asked the Maharashtra government to file an affidavit by June 10 on steps it is taking to curb the practice of taking dowry. A petition was filed in the court, saying that the anti-dowry act was not being implemented in the state, and awareness should be created in rural areas.

#Wildlife: The Supreme Court will hear the interlocutory application against the notification passed by the Kerala government allowing issuance of ownership certificates to elephant handlers on May 4.
The Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, which is the petitioner in the matter, has objected that the state does not have power under the Wildlife Protection Act to issue such notification.

#BlackMoney: After counsels argued that despite the Act passed by the legislature regarding black money, the court should also pass directions, the Supreme Court adjourned the matter to May 11. During the proceedings, senior advocate Indira Jaising, who was the intervener argued that according to the CAG report, more than Rs 6000 crore have been transferred from hawala transaction to various banks. “It is called Bank of Baroda scam,” she said.
Meanwhile, senior advocate Dushyant Dave stated that five reports have been filed but the court does not seem to have monitored it. “It is a matter of trillion dollars of black money, and is affecting the entire economy,” he further argued.

#WasteManagement: The Supreme Court today granted a stay on orders given by Madhya Pradesh High Court quashing the contract between the state government and a waste disposal company for outsourcing waste during the ongoing Kumbh mela. The SC also issued notice returnable by eight weeks.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had submitted to the bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh that the matter required urgent hearing as no one would collect the waste from the mela premises.

In February, Congress had screened a sting operation, wherein an aide of Minister Imran was shown demanding a bribe of Rs 25 lakh for granting environment clearance. Minister Imran has denied any link with that person.

#EducationScam: 11-year old case of Choudhary Charan Singh College was postponed for another date, as the Court will now hear the arguments on July 26th. Rs 100 crore was allocated for the construction of new building, which is now being contested in the court.
In the latest update, Solicitor General was asked to file a report after getting detailed information from CAG.
#FlightsToShimla: In the case related with flights to Shimla, Civil Aviation Ministry filed an affidavit saying that every airlines have now been mandated to fly 10% of their flights to Tier 2 areas like Shimla, North East and Andaman & Nicobar island.
Council representing Jet Airways argued that the aerodromes at these locations are not equipped to handle their large jets. Matter would be now heard on May 4th.

#FrivolousPIL: Bombay High Court scolded a petitioner over PIL which was related with compensation and service related issues. An employee of Environment Dept. had died due to snake bite; and his family filed a PIL seeking compensation.
Court asked how is this a Public Interest Litigation? Should every employee file PIL to sort out their work related issues? Court asked the petitioner to approach appropriate authorities for resolving the issues.

#IllegalReligiousStructures Supreme Court directed all states and union territories to file affidavits for taking steps to remove illegal religious structures from public roads and pavements.
The apex court gave them a final chance with a direction to file the affidavit within two weeks failing which the Chief Secretaries of the concerned states will have to be present personally to explain the non-compliance of various directions of the apex court passed from time to time in this regard.
A bench comprising Justices V Gopala Gowda and Arun Mishra posted the matter in the second week of May, observing “we don’t appreciate this type of attitude.”
The apex court was hearing the petition filed in 2006 in which directions were passed earlier to the states to remove unauthorised constructions, including places of worships, from roads and public places.
The apex court had also directed all other states’ counsel to take necessary instructions with regard to the compliance of the interim orders passed by it in this regard from time to time.
#SupremeCourt In Kerala, the appointment of munsif-magistrates, Supreme Court has refused to intervene in the case. The Court has asked that the case should be resolved between state government and Kerala High Court. Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justice UU Lalit said the bench to dismiss the case. The Kerala High Court on the plea of keeping counsel V Giri himself has agreed to withdraw the case.

#AttingalDoubleMurder: Thiruvananthapuram court sentences first accused Nino Mathew to capital punishment. Nino was the first accused in this case. While declaring the verdict, court termed it as ‘rarest of rare case’.
Nino’s partner in crime, Anushanthi, was sentenced to double life imprisonment. Both the accused also have to pay a fine of Rs 50 lakh.

#BombayBlasts2002-2003: Special POTA court awarded sentenced 10 convicts in the blasts case, with life imprisonment to main accused Muzammil Wahid Ansari and Farhan Khot. The remaining accused will be released after furnishing bail bonds as per procedure, as they have already undergone their maximum punishment.
#DroughtHitStates: The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to file an affidavit over implementation of MNREGA & release of funds for the states by Thursday, acting on a PIL filed in the court over drought hit states. The bench rapped the central government, saying, “Nine states are suffering from drought. You can’t turn a blind eye towards their problems.”
#FireSafetyNorms: The Allahabad High Court today directed the Uttar Pradesh government to constitute a committee to ascertain whether state-run hospitals are following fire safety norms while hearing a PIL regarding fire at Jhalkaribai Hospital.
The court directed the committee to submit a report within three months. It also ordered the finance department to make a separate allocation of budget for fire safety installations within hospitals.
The matter will be heard after three months.
#CoalScam: The Supreme Court adjourned the Coal Scam matter to May 4 after the committee appointed by the court submitted the report in a sealed cover. The bench of Justices Madan B Lokur, Kurian Joseph and AK Sikri handed over the report to the Attorney General to examine the content and ascertain if it can be disclosed.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has been impleaded as a party and the Attorney General has accepted notice. The MHRD will file its reply in three weeks.
#InhumanConditionsInJails: The Supreme Court today gave two weeks time to Nalsar College, Hyderabad to file its reply whether it has taken any initiative to provide legal aid to inmates. The court was hearing matter pertaining to -inhuman conditions in more than 1380 prisons.
The Solicitor General informed the court that no state other than the three- Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, and Bihar have responded to the court’s directions dated Feb 5 and March 14 regarding hygiene and cleanliness in jails.
#AdulteratedDrugs: The Supreme Court has sought response from the health ministry to allegation of adulterated drugs being sold by pharma companies like Ranbaxy. A PIL was filed in the court, seeking shutting down of three plants in Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, on charges of adulteration.
The bench of Justices PC Ghose and Amitava Roy has listed the matter after two weeks for final hearing.

#RetirementAgeForJudges: A PIL was filed to set a committee for reviewing the retirement age of Judges. Supreme Court refused to entertain PIL on retirement age of judges as CJI Thakur remarked, “This is one PIL for our benefit”, adding that retiring age of Judges has been 65 since the constitution was formulated.
The CJI also said that the age of the Judge might be in doubt but the retirement age has always been 65.
