Advocates Welfare Trust gives Rs 1 crore for needy lawyers

New Delhi: The Advocate Welfare Fund Trust (AWFT) has informed Delhi High Court that it has decided to give Rs 1 crore to needy advocates, irrespective of whether they are suffering from Covid-19 or not. This decision was taken at its meeting on September 2.

The bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan, while hearing the petition through video conferencing, noted that it was necessary to inform the advocates of this, and this can be done through SMS, etc.

The PIL had been filed by advocate Vaibhav Sharma, with a prayer to the Trustee Committee and BCD to pay the ex-gratia amount of at least Rs 25,000 each to needy advocates.

Senior Advocate N. Hariharan, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that there was a need to adequately publicize about the Trust’s grant, because not all advocates are aware of this. There was also a plea that the grant be increased at which the court said that it would, as and when the financial position of the trust permits.

With regards to the steps taken by the Trust for the advocates in need for COVID-19, the bench observed that there was no reason to further monitor this petition and hence, disposed off the same.
