Bombay High Court to hear poet-activist Varavara Rao’s bail plea on health grounds today

New Delhi (ILNS): Pendyala Hemlatha, wife of 81-year-old poet-activist Dr Varavara Rao, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking the release of her husband, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, on medical grounds.

The Supreme Court last month had requested the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court to hear an earlier bail plea pending before the High Court at the earliest. Rao’s wife has approached the High Court after Supreme Court refused to intervene in the matter.

The plea contends that the detention of Rao in Taloja Jail, despite his medical condition, amounts to cruelty.

The vacation bench of Justices AK Menon and SP Tavadewill hear the bail pleas filed by Rao today at 3 pm.

Rao was arrested in the Elgar Parishad case in 2018. The case was initially probed by the Pune Police, however, it was later transferred to the NIA in January this year.
