Calcutta HC orders CBI to investigate unnatural death of CRPF cadet

The Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in Bhopal has registered a case to investigate the unnatural death of a CRPF constable from Hooghly’s Tribeni (West Bengal), who was found hanging in his training camp at Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh in 2015.

An FIR was registered in compliance with an order issued by the Calcutta High Court in February this year. A division bench of Justices Sanjib Banerjee and Kaushik Chanda ordered the CBI probe on a plea by Suman Roy’s mother Jyotsna.

Roy’s body was found hanging from a tree in the CRPF camp on February 24, 2015. The police claimed it was suicide.

The compound where Suman’s body was found was the recruit training centre of the CRPF in that area. After selection he had been posted there for training.

Dismissing the police’s theory of suicide, his mother has claimed in her petition to the court that her son was under tremendous pressure and stress from his seniors. She said that since Suman was a college graduate, he allegedly faced problems from less-qualified seniors.

The court observed: “A report was prepared upon an inquiry conducted by the CRPF officials but there was no report of any investigation undertaken by the local police as there ought to have been upon on unnatural death. Though due to lapse of time it may be difficult for a fresh investigation to be appropriately undertaken, it is necessary that an attempt ought to be made to discover the circumstances surrounding the unnatural death if only to assuage the feelings of an aggrieved mother.”
