Calcutta High Court disposes PIL praying direction upon Kolkata Metro to extend time of last train by 45 minutes

The Calcutta High Court disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed   praying for a direction upon the Kolkata Metro to extend the time of the last train by about 45 minutes.

The PIL has been filed by an advocate practicing before the High Court.

The Division Bench of  Chief Justice T. S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya noted that the other Metro Rails operating in other Cities/States are operating their last train at 11:30 p.m.

The Court is conscious of the fact that the decision to fix the timing of the train rests fully with the Metro Rail authorities and this Court does not have expertise to go into the technical aspects as to whether the last Metro Rail can leave by around 10:45 p.m. In any event, since a large number of people are working in Kolkata and have to travel to their residence, which is not within Kolkata city, the authorities of the Metro Rail can consider the representation made by the petitioner.

Accordingly, the petition is  disposed of by the High Court by directing the respondents to consider the petitioner’s representation dated 10th July, 2023 and examine the feasibility of the request made therein.

The representation shall be considered and an appropriate reply sent to the petitioner within a period of four weeks from the date on which the copy of the representation is submitted in the office of the respondents along with the copy of this order, the Court further directed.
