Manipur High Court closes two PILs over contagious disease among cattle

The Manipur High Court has closed two Public Interest Litigations (PILs) on a contagious disease that fatally afflict cattle in Manipur.

The first PIL pertained to New Tusom and Wahong Villages in Ukhrul District, while second PIL pertained to Phaibung Khullen Village in Senapati District. The petitioners sought directions to the State authorities to set up veterinary relief camps and provide medical facilities for stopping the spread of the contagious disease.

While so, Athouba Khaidem, Government Advocate, appearing for the State authorities, informed the High Court that on 17.08.2022 that as per the letter dated 15.06.2022 received from the Joint Director, District Veterinary Office, Ukhrul, adequate steps had been taken to arrest the spread of Hemorrhagic Septicemia among cattle and that no deaths were reported after immunization was taken up. On that date, the counsel for the petitioners sought time to get instruction as to whether the spread of the disease had been arrested.

On July 31, Osbert Khaling, Counsel for the petitioners in both the cases, submitted that in the light of effective measures taken by the State authorities, the spread of the disease among the cattle has been successfully arrested.

In view of the matter, the grievance of the petitioners in these two cases stands settled, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice MV Muralidaran closed the PILs.
