CJI Chandrachud expresses displeasure over different counsels mentioning same case for listing

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Tuesday expressed his displeasure over the emerging practice of different counsels mentioning the same case for listing.

The oral observations were made in the open court after a counsel mentioned a matter relating to the lapse of a mining lease before the Bench of CJI Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra.

Noting that the matter was mentioned yesterday also, the CJI said that the lawyers need to discourage the practice of repeated mentionings of the same case to get a suitable order.

He said getting three different counsels and getting an order the moment a judge blinked, was what was happening in this Court.

Telling the lawyers not to take the Court for a ride, the CJI said that his discretionary powers would not be used to accommodate such tactics.

He further said that his credibility was at stake as people might think that the CJI was not following consistency in listing. He added that the Court must adhere to standard procedures for listing of cases.
