CJI Chandrachud tells young lawyers to trust their inner voice in uncharted waters

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has suggested young lawyers to trust their inner voice and personal values when faced with unique challenges just like the North Star, which guided people in uncharted waters.

Addressing the 32nd annual convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) at Bengaluru on Sunday, the CJI told the law graduates not to underestimate the power of their inner instincts and perspective.

He said that as law graduates get ready to embrace their careers, they should take pride in their individuality, personal experiences, values, and passions since these factors enable them to connect authentically with the people around them.

The CJI observed that since it was a fast-paced era, everyone seemed to be in a do-or-die situation.

He told the young lawyers that the early days of their careers would be demanding. They may feel inadequate, insecure and isolated at times. Many of them may experience this burnout, but they should remember that they are not alone in this journey. Leading did not mean being alone – though the lawyers migh sometimes feel so.

No matter how forced the sense of urgency, the lawyers must approach life with patience, he noted, adding that they should deal with obstacles with patience. He suggested that law graduates build a strong support network and spend time with their family & friends.

Sharing his personal experiences, the CJI said that when he faced a vortex of conflict, he relied on self-reflection and the inner voice. Appealing to something guided by eternal values intended to espouse liberty, dignity and autonomy of an individual, which helped him guide in such situations.

He said he would hear different viewpoints, then retreat himself, shutting out the cacophony of voices.

Attorney General R Venkataramani highlighted the need for young lawyers to balance between the humanistic approach and increasingly embraced legal technology.

He said the huge call for economic and social reordering waiting at the doors demanded visionary allegiance. The inter search would help young lawyers in searching for the right answers in their legal journey
