Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday inaugurated a new creche for the staff and lawyers of the Supreme Court of India.
Speaking on the occasion, CJI Chandrachud said the idea was to create a safe and appealing environment for the children of those who came to work in the Apex Court every day.
He said the Supreme Court almost had a staff of 2,500 members, which included a considerable number of young lawyers.
The earlier creche was spread over an area of 198 square metres, which made it difficult to accommodate more kids.
He said the new creche has been built in an area of 450 square metres. It can accommodate around 100 children of lawyers and staff of the Supreme Court.
Besides, it has a play area, feeding area, sleeping area and a dining area for young children. Young mothers can feed their babies in the feeding area in privacy.
This would encourage young female lawyers to join the legal profession without worrying about the safety and security of their children, added the CJI.
