A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University student Sharjeel Imam in a case pertaining to the violence that occurred on the December 13 and 14, 2019 in Jamia Millia Islamia. Imam was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He was also among the several activists accused under UAPA registered by the Delhi Police in the Delhi Riots of 2020.
The bench of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar of Karkardooma court granted bail to Sharjeel Imam noting the fact that during the course of investigation, Imam was not arrested in the said matter. The bench while allowing his bail application made a note of the nature of the offence committed by him.
In the FIR, Imam was booked for offences under Section 120B read with 34, 143, 148, 147, 353, 149, 333, 332, 323, 435, 186, 341, 308 and 427 of the Indian Penal code, along with offences under UAPA and rioting. The bench granted him bail subject to him furnishing a bail bond of Rs 25,000 and a surety of like amount.
Previously, Imam was denied him bail in a 2019 case alleging inflammatory and instigating speeches during the anti-CAA-NRC protests that he delivered which led to Delhi Riots at various places. The court observed that such speeches tend to weaken the peace and harmony of the society.

However, the bench noted that the evidences against him were sketchy and scant, and further examination was required to say if the speeches delivered by him amounted to offences of sedition under Sections 124 A and 153 A of IPC.
Last month, the Allahabad High Court had granted bail to Sharjeel Imam in a sedition case against him, observing that no violence was incited due to his speech at Aligarh Muslim Univeristy during the anti-CAA-NRC protests in Aligarh.
