The Delhi High Court today granted protection to an interfaith couple from Bihar apprehending a threat to their life from their family members and other relatives of the woman.
A Vacation Bench of Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice to the Delhi Government and the concerned Station House Officer; and directed the said SHO to ensure adequate protection and safety to the couple. The matter would now be heard on July 26. The police protection shall continue till then.
The petition has been filed by an 18-year-old Hindu girl and a 30-year-old Muslim boy, who are both neighbours in their native village in Bihar.
The plea contends that due to religious differences, the family members of the couple were not in favour of their marriage. It states that the couple left their native place on June 11, 2021 and reached Delhi to get married. On June 21, 2021, the couple applied for solemnization of their marriage before Marriage Registrar, Kalkaji, Delhi; and the marriage is scheduled on July 5, 2021. The plea alleges that the family members of the woman are threatening the couple of dire consequences if they get married and are thereto, causing undue fear of life of the couple and not allowing them to get married and lead a happy married life.
