Delhi HC directs FSL to conduct DNA test of bodies burned in Delhi riots

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday has directed Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to complete the DNA testing of the body allegedly burnt in Delhi Riots and communicate its results expeditiously to the petitioner.

The writ petition was filed by a riot victim whose father allegedly died in Delhi Riots erupted on 23rd February, 2020 in North East Delhi. The petitioner informed the court that her father was shot and then burnt by the rioters. However, petitioner has already identified the body of her father, but since the body is severely burnt, due to which DNA matching has to be done to confirm the identity of the remains of her father.

Mr. Naushad Ahmed, Delhi government advocate informed the Court that “…priority is accorded to the victims of the recent violence, and the DNA matching of the body identified by the petitioner would be done by 16.04.2020 as the same is already underway.”

The Single Judge bench of Justice Vibhu Bakhru agreed to the submissions made by the Government’s counsel and allowed the petition thereby, directing the Forensic Science Laboratory to complete the test and communicate its result as expeditiously as possible, giving a leverage of submitting results in any event on or before 18th April, 2020.
