The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice on a petition that sought appropriate action against media houses as well as individuals who exposed the identity of the victim of the brutal gang rape and murder of the Hyderabad girl last week.
Notices were issued by the bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar in Yashdeep Chahal’s PIL to the Centre, Delhi Government, Telangana Government, Press Council of India, Facebook India, Twitter, News Broadcasting Standards Authority of India, OpIndia, New Indian Express and India Today.
The PIL states that exposure of name, work details of victim and accused persons, violates section 228A of IPC and the Supreme Court’s guidelines in Nipun Saxena case.
Besides seeking appropriate proceedings against violators, the petition has also sought court’s direction to prevent investigation authorities from supplying information on the merits of the case to the media houses which could prove detrimental at trial. The petitioners have also sought immediate enquiry against officers who failed to take cognizance of the violation that took place ..
