The Delhi Government has recently informed the Delhi High Court that the CCTV cameras have already been fitted in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses shunting in the national capital.
The development ensued during the hearing of a plea listed before the Bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad, seeking installation of CCTV cameras and other security and safety features in DTC buses and other public transport buses.
The instant petition was filed in 2017 by one Manish Kumar after his laptop was stolen while travelling on a cluster bus. When he confronted the thieves, they tried to attack him with knives, but he escaped unhurt.
Alleging that no FIR was lodged by the police in connection with the offence and that the police had referred him from one police station to another, Kumar, in his plea, sought an SIT or CBI inquiry into the incidents of non-registration of FIRs by the police stations in the city upon a cognizable offence being reported to them. In addition, the plea also sought formation of a court-monitored committee to review the safety and security features in public transport.
The status report filed by the Delhi Government in the matter revealed that as far as DTC buses are concerned, CCTV cameras have already been fitted, the GPS system has been installed and Marshals have also been posted. The report highlighted that the process of fitting CCTV cameras in Cluster buses is underway, and shall be completed as expeditiously as possible.
The counsel representing the Delhi Government informed the court that as and when any instance of misbehaviour is brought to the notice of the city Police, FIR is registered promptly and that the Delhi Police Commissioner is personally monitoring the registration of FIRs regarding misbehaviour and harassment on women in Delhi.
In light of the detailed and exhaustive reply and steps taken by the Delhi Government, the Court disposed of the instant petition.
