Delhi High Court issues notice in plea seeking Rs 1 crore for Covid deceased constable

Counsel for respondents submitted that due to some administrative issues, the said amount could not have been released.

The Delhi High Court on Friday has issued notice in plea seeking ex-gratia amount to the family members of deceased Delhi Police Constable who lost his life to Covid-19 on May 5, 2020, while serving as the frontline warrior in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Vacation Bench of Justice Amit Bansal sought response from the State Government as to why the ex-gratia amount to the tune of Rs.1 crore as promised by the Chief Minister of Delhi not yet been given.

Counsel for the petitioner relied upon a tweet made by the Delhi CM wherein the sacrifice made by Late Delhi Police Constable has been noticed by the State and the said ex- gratia amount was announced to be given to the family members of the deceased. He submitted that the said amount has, however, not yet been paid even one year after the announcement.

Counsel for respondents submitted that due to some administrative issues, the said amount could not have been released.

The petition was filed by the wife of Late Sh. Amit Kumar who was a Constable at Delhi Police posted at P.S. Bharat Nagar in the North-West district of Delhi and was the first Delhi Police personnel to have succumbed to the deadly virus. The petitioner has two small children aged 5 years and 5 months respectively. The plea said that a tweet was made from the office of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi on 07.05.2020 which read us: “Delhi salutes Ct Amit, the brave Delhi Police official who lost his life to Corona while serving the people of Delhi. Hon. CM Arvind Kejriwal has announced that Amit’s family will be provided Rs. 1 crore ex-gratia.”
