Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of fact-checking site Alt News, who was arrested for posting objectionable content on social media in 2018 against a Hindu deity, was granted bail by a Delhi Court on Friday.
Additional Sessions Judge Devender Kumar Jangala granted bail to Zubair on a bail bond of Rs 50,000 with one surety.
He was directed not to leave the country without the permission of the court.
The Special Cell of Delhi Police had registered a case against Zubair under Sections 153A, 295A,201, 120B of the Indian Penal Code and Section 35 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act 2010.
The Counsel for Zubair contended before the court that he may be granted bail under Section 439 of the Criminal Procedure Code as the probe in the case was over.
The Government Counsel submitted that the matter was at the initial stage of investigation and looking into the nature and gravity of offence, the bail application of the applicant may be dismissed.
However, despite getting bail, Zubair will remain in the judicial custody of Uttar Pradesh police in another case.
