Former SC judge Ashok Bhushan to head NCLAT, former Manipur CJ to be NCLT president

The Central Government on Friday appointed chairpersons for the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

The Ministry of Corporate affairs notification said Justice (Retd) Ashok Bhushan has been appointed the new chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal for a period of four years or till he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. Justice (Retired) Ashok Bhushan took charge of the office on November 8.

Justice Ashok Bhushan, who retired as a Supreme Court judge on July 2,2021, was part of several important judgments including the 2019 Ayodhya Ramjanmabhoomi title suit, the 2018 Aadhaar verdict, the 2021 ‘one nation, one ration card’ scheme, the 2021 loan moratorium order and the 2021 striking down of the Maratha quota via SEBC.

Justice Bhushan was to retire on July 4 but advanced it to July 2 due to his mother’s demise. He joined the Supreme Court as a judge on May 13, 2016 and was chief justice of the Kerala High Court from 2015.

At the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), the Central Government appointed Justice (Retd) Ramalingam Sudhakar, the former Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, as its President for a period of five years or till he attains age of 67 years or until further orders, whichever is earliest.

The NCLT was under the supervision of its acting president Sh. Bethala Shanta Vijaya Prakash Kumar.

Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar was born on February 14, 1959 and hails from Panapakkam Village, Vellore district in Tamil Nadu. He was elevated to the Bench as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Madras on December 10, 2005. As a Judge of the Madras High Court, during his tenure as Judge he decided 26196 Main Cases and 32943 MiscellaneousCases.

Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, apart from his judicial duties, takes a proactive role in providing various infrastructure for speedy adjudication of disputes.
