Gujarat High Court directs state to submit affidavit on filling up consumer commissions

The Gujarat High Court recently issued an order in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) specifically addressing the filling of vacancies in the State Consumer Commission and District Consumer Commission.

As per the Consumer Protection Rules, 2020, the Court directed the state to bring on record the status of filling up these vacancies.

However, the Principal Secretary, Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, filed an affidavit stating that the issue is currently being considered by the Apex Court in a Special Leave Petition.

The affidavit further clarified that the process of filling up the vacancies could not be conducted due to the ongoing proceedings in the Apex Court.

Regarding the recruitment of support staff, such as junior clerks, senior clerks, and stenographers, the Assistant Government Pleader submitted that the recruitment process is underway.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi granted the petitioner two weeks to file a reply to the affidavit and listed the matter for further hearing on February 7, 2025.
