HC Directs Delhi Police To Respond To Brinda Karat’s Application Over Delhi Riots Victims

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed Delhi Police to file its reply on an application filed by Left Leader Brinda Karat seeking direction to the Delhi Police to upload the FIRs registered in pursuant to the Delhi Riots on the official website of the Delhi Police.

A division bench presided by Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar of Delhi High Court while conducting hearing through video conferencing heard an urgent application filed by Ms. Brinda Karat in the Delhi Riots matter. 

It has been alleged in the plea that the people being arrested are not being given the right to counsel of choice. Names of the people being arrested are not being put up outside the PCR rooms. It was the list of people arrested was put up only outside 2 PCR rooms, whereas, all of the PCR are supposed to put up the list, Ms. Narula stated while talking to India Legal. 

The application also sought directions to the Delhi Police to provide the copies of FIR, remand application, orders of Remand and grounds of arrest and copy of charge-sheets through email/ whatsapp/ post to the families and counsels of the accused persons.

The list of people arrested in the matter have been uploaded online whereas, the same does not match with our list”, Ms. Narula said.

The people arrested are not being provided with transparent access to justice.

She also stated that there have been several directions of the courts to follow the provision under section 41 of the Criminal Procedure Code but there is still no effective compliance of the orders by the authorities.
