The Kerala High Court today stayed the order of the Kerala Government to supply the alcohol to the people suffering from Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms after that person produces a medical certificate to that effect.
The interim order was given by the bench comprising of Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Shaji P Chaly while listening to a petition filed by Congress MP T N Prathapan, Indian Medical Association and Kerala Government Medical Officers Association.
The Doctors stated that they cannot prescribe alcohol as a cure for alcohol dependency, it is against basic medical tenets
The State Attorney K V Sohan submitted that administration of alcohol in moderate amounts is recognized practice to cure alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
Justice Nambiar said, “We are concerned that the State Government has taken a unilateral decision to administer more alcohol to persons suffering from alcohol withdrawal syndrome. This is a recipe for disaster”
The Kerala Government had earlier ordered Excise Department to supply alcohol to people suffering from withdrawal symptoms when the person supplies a medical certificate supplied by a doctors.
