Kolkata horror: Supreme Court Registry files complaint against social media post maligning CJI and his family

Taking serious note of a message widely circulated on social media linking a member of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s family to a medical lobby in West Bengal, ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata, the Supreme Court Registry has filed a complaint with the Cyber Unit of the Delhi Police.

A notification issued by the Supreme Court Registry said a malicious post had been circulated on X (formerly Twitter), linking CJI Chandrachud’s wife Kalpana Das to a medical lobby in Kolkata.

Calling the tweet ill-intended, factually incorrect and an attempt to malign the judiciary, the Supreme Court Registry said the CJI’s wife was not related to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s personal physician, as claimed in the tweet.

According to sources, another post on X claimed that the CJI and his family have holidayed in Malaysia & Bangkok with CM Banerjee’s nephew.

Sources further said that the CJI’s family has never visited Thailand. CJI Chandrachud visited Kuala Lumpur in 2003 for a cancer survivors conference. His wife did not visit the place at all. The CJI has also not been there for 21 years. Since 2016 when he joined the top court of the country, Justice Chandrachud has not had a single private visit abroad and all visits were official, added the sources.

The West Bengal Police also posted a tweet in this connection, saying that it has come to their notice that extremely derogatory and baseless aspersions were being cast by some people in social media about the Supreme Court of India and the Chief Justice of India.

Exploiting freedom of speech to indulge in wild falsehood, that too against the Apex Court, was illegal and punishable. The sternest possible legal action would be initiated against those trying to malign the judiciary, added the post on X.
