The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Lady Hardinge Hospital to constitute a medical board to ascertain the feasibility of medical termination of pregnancy of a woman, who has undergone 22 weeks and 5 days of gestation period.
A Single-Judge Bench of Justice Rekha Palli directed the Medical Superintendent of Lady Hardinge Hospital to furnish the report, ascertaining the feasibility of medical termination of pregnancy of petitioner within five days.
Justice Rekha Palli asked Advocate Sneha Mukherjee, “You are becoming an expert on MTP (medical termination of pregnancy), all the matters are coming through you only.”
Advocate Mukherjee replied, “Most of the cases are referred by Gynaecologists, who cannot terminate the pregnancy on their own.”
The petitioner had relied on an ultrasound report to state that the foetus was suffering from Multicystic dysplastic kidney and if the pregnancy is brought to a natural end, the baby would be born with serious physical deformities. The matter has been listed for further hearing on October 12.
