The Karnataka High Court has decided to dispose of the suo motu case that was filed when police attacked a young lawyer in Chikkamagaluru over a traffic violation.
A bench comprising of Chief Justice PB Varale and Justice Krishna S Dixit have disposed off the matter closed the matter after noting that the State government has acted promptly and that the Crime Investigation Department’s (CID) investigation into the matter is at a preliminary stage.
The Court said that it finds no reason to issue any further direction. The purpose of taking cognisance by this Court on the representation by advocates’ association has achieved its purpose.
The court said that the counsel should not generalise all police officers as wrongdoers.
The Court said that there may be a bad sheep in the flock but that does not say that all are bad.
Talking about the police, the Court said that people go to police booths because there are good policemen. If we say all police are bad, all lawyers are bad, all judges are bad, where will we land?
The Judges said that (Not saying that wrong was not done but) don’t paint the whole department with the same colour,” he remarked.
Notably, the Court today declined requests made to fix a timeline for the CID probe or for disciplinary action against errant police officers.
