The Madhya Pradesh High Court disposed of a 16-year-old Public Interest Litigation (PIL) claiming all unclaimed bodies may be given to them for study or to be handed over to the concerned medical colleges.
The plea of the petitioner was that so far as the medical students are concerned, corpses are required for their education.
Notices were issued to the State. Reply has been filed along with the rejoinder thereafter.
The State has stated that various instructions have been issued by them on 28.07.2014 with regard to the disposal of unclaimed dead bodies. The said instructions are being updated periodically by the State. That every effort is being made by the State in order to ensure that unclaimed dead bodies are considered and based on the directions issued by the State.
In view of the stand of the State that directions have been issued as to how unclaimed dead bodies are to be treated, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice Vishal Mishra do not find any need to keep this matter pending.
