Madras HC defers suo motu hearing against TN Minister after Supreme Court gives verdict on KSSR Ramachandran

The Madras High Court has deferred hearing in a suo motu revision case initiated against Tamil Nadu Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management KSSR Ramachandran to February 7, following the Supreme Court’s verdict on a Special Leave Petition filed by the Minister.

The single-judge Bench of Justice N Anand Venkatesh had initiated the suo motu proceedings in August last year against KKSSR and several other Tamil Nadu ministers.

The High Court adjourned the hearing on Monday after being apprised that the Apex Court had delivered its final orders in the SLP filed by KKSSR against the High Court’s decision to begin the proceedings against his discharge.

In its judgement, the Supreme Court directed the Madras High Court Chief Justice to either hear the suo motu matters himself or appoint another bench to hear it.

Justice Venkatesh said on Monday that he was adjourning the hearing to enable the High Court to go through the Supreme Court order.

On August 23 last year, Justice Venkatesh had initiated suo motu revision proceedings against orders of several special courts in the State discharging Tamil Nadu ministers, including KKSSR in cases of disproportionate assets.

At the time, Justice Venkatesh had remarked that something very “rotten” seemed to be going on in the special courts and that he seemed to have “opened a can of worms” in having examined these orders and in initiating the suo motu revision proceedings.

On Monday, the Court was scheduled to hear the suo motu cases against KKSSR and State Minister for Human Resource Management Thangam Thenarasu.
