The Madras High Court on Monday issued notice to Central Government and oil companies in a writ petition seeking compensation in event of death from COVID-19 to LPG delivery boys.
The writ petition has been filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India praying for the issuance of Writ of Mandamus, to direct the Central Government and Oil Companies to provide proper insurance coverage upto 25 lakhs for LPG deliverymen in cash of death due to corona virus infection by collecting the name list of all deliverymen employed by LPG distributing Agencies through online communication and to provide all LPG deliverymen with necessary preventive materials to contain the spread deliverymen with necessary preventive materials to contain the spread of Corona Virus, such as N95 safety masks and gloves set for each cylinder, and sufficient quantity of hand wash liquid for washing of their hands, and on rupee detergent soap powder sachet for each cylinder to wash cylinders before taking them from godown and from consumers.
The petition is also seeking to issue public notice of authorization for the LPG deliverymen to move freely from and to of home and workplace and to take cylinders from godown and to deliver the same to consumers with in stipulated time may be fixed by this Court.
The case was heard by the division bench comprising of Justice M. Sathyanaryanan & Justice M. Nirmal Kumar, who observed that there is imminent urgency to entertain this Writ Petition. And after hearing the counsel for the petitioner and perusing the documents issued notice to the Central Government & Oil Companies.
The Court is set to hear this matter on 14th of May, 2020.
