The Madras High Court dismissed a plea to restrict the number of advocates accompanying VIPs/VVIPs in court.
The bench of Chief Justice K.R. Shriram and Justice Senthil Kumar Ramamoorthy dismissed the public interest litigation filed by advocate N. Mahendra Babu.
The petition sought a directive to frame rules limiting the number of advocates accompanying VIPs/VVIPs in subordinate courts, citing inconvenience to other advocates and litigants.
The court held that in the absence of a public duty to impose restrictions, the petitioner was not entitled to a mandamus.
Currently, there is no enactment regulating the number of advocates appearing for or accompanying parties to court.
The petitioner had submitted a representation to the High Court Registrar on July 17, 2023, which prompted the filing of this petition.
The court dismissed the petition without costs.
