Madras High Court disposes PIL concerning menace of the stray pigs within the limits of Padappai Village

The Madras High Court disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed concerning the menace of the stray pigs within the limits of Padappai Village ,Sriperumbudur Taluk, Kancheepuram District.

The High Court had asked learned Special Government Pleader to place on record the status report as to the menace of the stray pigs.

On September 14 , the report is filed by learned Special Government Pleader, which reads thus:

“A meeting was conducted with the Block Medical Officer, Health Inspector, Panchayat President, Panchayat Secretary and the owners on 08.07.2023 at 12.00 pm at Panchayat Union Office, Padappai and decided to conduct Special Medical Camp to bring awareness to the People regarding the various diseases that may spread due to pigs and checkups were made.

It was also decided to clean the vicinity and to curb the dumping of garbage, so that pigs do not stray and come into the village in search of food.

Based on the above meeting, Special Medical Camp was conducted on 10.07.2023 and 12.07.2023 in Kizpadappai, Athanancheri Colony and Athanancheri Village of Padppai panchayat. Action was taken to remove the garbages thrown in an unregulated manner. Also the existing garbages were cleared on 10.07.2023 to 12.07.2023. Further the stray pigs were caught and were safely sent back to the forest by the concerned officials.

It is submitted that the cleaning of garbage will be done in routine manner and stray pigs will also be caught than (sic) and there and will be sent to forest. The public will be sensitized about hygiene health hazards etc.

I submit that cleaning work is now in progress, whereby a team from the corporation is assigned with the work of routine cleaning of garbages based on a route map, so as to keep all the areas free of garbage.”

Upon perusal of the report, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala and Justice P.D. Audikesavalu noted that steps are being taken to remove the garbage.

“We hope and trust that the said steps would be routinely undertaken, so that the menace of pigs is curbed and the health and safety of the villagers are preserved. At the same time, the villagers also should not throw garbages in an unregulated manner”, the order reads.
