The Meghalaya High Court directed Government Counsel to instruct the traffic enforcement agencies,the importance of adherence to the traffic safety rules and other requirements.
The Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice H.S. Thangkhiew, and Justice B. Bhattacharjee heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed seeking direction against the failure on the part of the law enforcement agencies to enforce stringent provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 with regard to reckless and negligent riding of two wheelers at a high speed within the district.
The counsel for the Petitioner has drawn the attention of the Court to the information received by an RTI application which shows that there have been 21 fatalities and 28 injuries in the period of 12 months from 30.07.2022 to 23.07.2023 due to reckless riding.
He, therefore, prays that appropriate directions to be issued to direct the traffic enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the Motor Vehicles Act and to install proper check at strategic points to stem this menace.
The Bench directed posting the matter on 07.02.2024. learned AAG at this stage is directed to obtain instructions and also to instruct the traffic enforcement agencies as to the importance of adherence to the traffic safety rules and other requirements to curbthis menace especially taking into account that the festive season is around the corner.
