Morbi bridge collapse: Gujarat HC directs payment of compensation to victims

The Gujarat High Court, comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi, directed compensation and rehabilitation measures for victims of the Morbi bridge collapse. 

The court’s order  addressed the welfare of affected families, ensuring monthly compensation and education expenses.

Key directives:

– Compensation of Rs 12,000 per month to 66 individuals from Sahay Seva Parivar Trust, Morbi.

– Education expenses for orphan children, including medical and post-graduation courses.

– Marriage expenses for young girl victims (ten in number).

– Lump sum compensation of Rs. 1,40,000 to Aftab Isubhai Rathod for spine injury.

– Medical expenditure reimbursement.

The court appreciated the efforts of Court Commissioner Aishvarya Gupta, Amicus Curiae Varun K. Patel, and Shikha Panchal, ordering token payments.

The order follows a report by the independent Court Commissioner, highlighting:

– Visits to 71 families of 114 deceased victims.

– Interaction with victims’ families, ensuring awareness of benefits.

– Tripartite agreement execution for individual beneficiaries.

The Court directed that the respondent company must file an affidavit detailing compliance with directives. 

The matter is listed for November 28, 2024.
