The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) on May 11, 2024 has organised the 2nd National Lok Adalat, 2024 in the Taluks, Districts and High Courts in 20 states and Union Territories. The states and UTs include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand.
The National Lok Adalat was held to uphold a justice system that fosters affordability, accessibility and inclusivity. This Lok Adalat, under the leadership of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Supreme Court judge and Executive Chairman of NALSA, provided a platform for dispute resolution encouraging conciliation and promoting amicable settlement. Notably, Lok Adalat in other states will be scheduled after the conclusion of Lok Sabha elections.
The NALSA stated that a significant number of 7,71,187 cases have been settled at the 2nd National Lok Adalat on May 11, including 3,21,959 pre-litigation cases and 4,49,228 pending cases of criminal compoundable offences, traffic challans, revenue cases, bank recovery cases, motor accident claims, cheque dishonour cases, labour disputes, matrimonial disputes, land acquisition cases, IPR or consumer matters and other civil cases. It added that the approximate value of total settlement amount in these cases was Rs 2733.79 crores.
The NALSA also remarked that the successful disposal of these aforesaid cases reflects the success of the National Lok Adalat upholding NALSA’s commitment to provide comprehensive legal remedies that are not only equitable and just but also easily accessible to all sections of society.
