National Green Tribunal disposes of case concerning contaminated water along Palkhi route

The National Green Tribunal’s Western Zone Bench in Pune has disposed of a case regarding contaminated water sources along the Palkhi route in Pune District, Maharashtra.

The issue was brought to light by a news report of June 24, 2024, stating that 81 out of 82 water sources were unfit for consumption.

The Principal Bench at New Delhi took suo motu cognizance of the matter and directed notices to be sent to respondents, including the District Magistrate, Pune, and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

The MPCB submitted a reply affidavit stating that they had requested concerned authorities to take necessary actions.

According to the District Health Officer, Pune, water samples from public sources were regularly tested, and no outbreaks of waterborne diseases occurred during the Palkhi period.

Given this response, the Western Bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh and Dr Vijay Kulkarni decided not to proceed further with the case.
