National Green Tribunal junks plea seeking strict compliance to animal slaughter rules

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has dismissed a plea filed seeking strict compliance with rules related to animal slaughter.

The tribunal, led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi, and Expert Member Dr. A. Senthil Vel, found the application lacking in factual background and specific instances of rule violations.

Brand Ambassador Viyana Berwal’s application cited various provisions, including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001.

However, the NGT noted that the applicant failed to provide material factual particulars, such as names, details, or areas where violations occurred.

The applicant, representing themselves, argued for compulsory stunning of animals before slaughter, referencing Rule 6(4) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001.

However, the tribunal clarified that this rule does not make stunning mandatory.

The NGT dismissed the application but granted liberty to the applicant to file a fresh plea in proper form, disclosing full material particulars related to environmental norm violations.
