The Meghalaya High Court has recently disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the recent collapse of the central dome over the proposed new Assembly building at New Shillong.
The PIL has been filed by one Pawan Sharma. The collapse of the dome made headlines in all newspapers and there has been constant bickering since then.
The petition reveals that there is a high-powered committee which has been put in place to report on the causes and, possibly, suggest the remedial measures that may be taken.
While considering the PIL, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W. Diengdoh observed that since it is for the State to take appropriate action against the builder and the matter pertains to apparent faulty construction or design, the Court did not deem it proper to rush into the case immediately and without allowing the appropriate authorities to deal with the matter in accordance with law.
“Accordingly, the present petition, apparently filed in public interest and not for publicity, is disposed of with liberty to any public spirited individual to raise the issues again, in the event they are not appropriately dealt with by the administration,” the order reads.
