The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognizance of a news article regarding the discharge of sewage into Satpula Lake from a large drain in Khirki near Saket Court in South Delhi.
The tribunal is examining the issue and has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to file reports on the current status of the lake.
The DDA has filed a report stating that the work of reviving the lake was handed over to Rotary International, and the lake was cleaned on August 18, 2024.
However, the report lacks detailed information on the cleaning process.
The DPCC has also filed a report stating that the analysis of lake water samples showed high levels of ammoniacal nitrogen and nil dissolved oxygen.
The Principal Bench, comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson, and Dr. A. Senthil Vel, Expert Member, has directed the DPCC to place on record the sample analysis report and the DDA to provide relevant material showing the current status of the lake.
The case has been listed for further hearing on April 15, 2025.
