The Patna High Court disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed for establishing electric crematoriums across the State for the convenience of the people to carryout safe burial.
The PIL has been filed by one Mukesh Ranjan.
The Managing Director, Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (BUIDCO) , has submitted a report, based on which, the Principal Secretary, Urban Development, Housing Department, Government of Bihar, has filed an affidavit dated 01.02.2023.
The Reports reads as folllows:-
“11. That apart from above it is pertinent to mention here that the State Government has decided to construct 35 set of crematorium under different 35 district towns of the State under “Sat Nischayan Part- 2” programme giving name of the said crematoriums ‘MOKSHDHAM’ at total cost of Rs. 20737.79006 lakhs. A tender process for construction of the aforesaid 35 crematorium is underway by executing agency BUIDCO as per the report submitted to the department 16/12 / 2022.”
The Counsel for the petitioner, submits that a time frame may be imposed to complete the same.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice K. Vinod Chandran and Justice Harish Kumar opined that no time frame can be ordered by the Court. But, the Court hoped that there will be expeditious construction carried out of the crematoriums, as submitted before the Court.
